WCID No. 17 continuously conducts water safety testing at our plants to ensure the water meets standards set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The District recently received two inquiries from customers who noticed their water was slightly discolored.
First and foremost, we assure residents the water remains 100% safe to drink. The observed discoloration is directly linked to an increase in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels, a delayed effect of the significant flooding this past summer. When extensive vegetation is submerged underwater for prolonged periods, it naturally breaks down and releases compounds known as tannins in the water source. Tannins, which are natural organic dyes (the same compound found in tea) cause the slight discoloration.
Please know we are actively implementing treatment adjustments to counteract the elevated TOC levels and reduce discoloration. We continue to work closely with the TCEQ to ensure all safety standards are met.
We encourage customers to reach out if they have questions.
Thank you,
